Real estate transactions are an attractive deal for cyber criminals. One targeted, fraudulent email can cause an unwitting consumer to redirect a high-dollar real estate payment to a scammer. Here are a few ways to protect yourself from real estate scams.

  1. Beware of suspicious emails. Real estate scammers spoof legitimate sources, like your title company, mortgage lender, and even your own real estate agent. It’s a good idea to confirm the instructions regarding any financial aspect of your transaction by using contact information you know is legitimate.

  2. Beware of suspicious phone calls. Scammers are able to spoof phone numbers that appear to be from a trusted partner in your real estate transaction. If you receive an unusual call with financial instructions, call back using the contact information you know is accurate to confirm details.

  3. Try to talk in person. With all of the ways scammers are targeting consumers, sometimes in person conversations are the surest ways to confirm  where your money should go.

  4. Don’t be afraid to talk to your REALTOR®. Your REALTOR® is committed to helping you through your transaction, and will do what it takes to make sure you’re comfortable during your real estate transaction.
